Partnering to increase diversity in Chile鈥檚 mining industry | Generando alianzas para aumentar la diversidad en la industria minera en Chile

Patricia Hidalgo is pivoting to a career in construction after years of working as a secretary and bank teller. The 28-year-old La Serena resident is making the change with help from 8868体育app下载 and , a nonprofit whose mission it is to increase the representation of women in the Chilean workforce.

The two organizations joined forces earlier this year to create the Female Trainee Program, which is focused on developing entry-level opportunities for women in Chile鈥檚 booming mining industry.

This new program, which commenced in May 2022, includes 45 women without previous experience in the mining industry. The women, including Patricia, have attended workshops on safety, works at height, topography, and mechanical and concrete pouring tasks led by 8868体育app下载鈥檚 teams to learn more about the various project disciplines.

According to Patricia, 鈥淭he training we received was very extensive and included a lot of information. I wanted to try this new opportunity because my studies were related to secretarial work and as a bank teller. We were warmly welcomed, and I鈥檇 like to continue learning and growing with the company.鈥�

Following the training process, the women have been assigned to field roles with the engineering, construction, and safety teams to support monitoring plans and completing works.

Ver贸nica Rivera is 31 years old and originally from the port city of Coquimbo. In 2021, she took a 聽plumbing course offered by the women鈥檚 training center in her hometown, with the aim of changing her routine as a full-time homemaker. Now, she is participating in the training program and supporting the supervision of scaffolding work documents.

鈥淚鈥檓 very happy. When I entered the program, I didn鈥檛 have much experience, with the exception of one year of metallurgy studies, although I didn鈥檛 finish my degree, and a basic plumbing course I had completed,鈥� Ver贸nica said. 鈥淚n the past, I primarily focused on my home, children and husband, and this was an opportunity to do something different.鈥�

By creating this synergy with Emerge-Lab, and with the support of 8868体育app下载鈥檚 field management teams, the trainee program has presented us with the opportunity to include more women in 8868体育app下载, providing them with training and education to increase their knowledge and make it possible to enter a new, diverse work environment that allows them to increase their job options.

鈥淭he experience has been great, and everyone was very happy to welcome us,鈥� Ver贸nica added. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been learning from the ground up, and they鈥檙e encouraging us to continue making a career in this industry.鈥�

The trainees have been performing a variety of jobs in the field for over two months. Upon completing their assignment period, our trainee colleagues will receive a document certifying their experience, strengthening their work history.

According to the site teams, Veronica and other trainees鈥� contributions have been very valuable. Las dos organizaciones unieron sus fuerzas a principios de este a帽o para crear el Programa de Mujeres Aprendices, que est谩 enfocado en desarrollar oportunidades para mujeres sin experiencia previa en la siempre creciente industria minera chilena.

Este nuevo programa, iniciado en mayo de 2022, incluye a 45 mujeres que no ten铆an experiencia previa en la industria minera. Las mujeres, incluyendo a Patricia, han participado en talleres de seguridad, trabajo en altura, topograf铆a, mec谩nica y hormigonado, entre otros, liderados por los equipos de 8868体育app下载 con el fin de conocer las diferentes disciplinas de los proyectos.

De acuerdo con Patricia, 鈥渓a capacitaci贸n que nos proporcionaron fue muy amplia y con mucha informaci贸n, quer铆a probar esta nueva oportunidad porque mis estudios son de secretariado y cajera bancario. Tuvimos una muy buena recepci贸n, me gustar铆a seguir aprendiendo y creciendo dentro de la empresa鈥�.

Luego del proceso de capacitaci贸n, se han integrado a trabajos en terreno con los equipos de ingenier铆a, construcci贸n y seguridad, apoyando el seguimiento de planes y de entrega de los trabajos.

Ver贸nica Rivera tiene 31 a帽os y es originaria de la ciudad portuaria de Coquimbo. En 2021 hizo un curso de plomer铆a y gasfiter铆a dictado por el Centro de la Mujer de su ciudad, con la intenci贸n de cambiar su rutina como due帽a de casa a tiempo completo. Ahora es una de las aprendices del programa y actualmente apoya la supervisi贸n de documentos del trabajo de andamios.

鈥淓stoy muy contenta, cuando ingres茅 al programa no ten铆a mucha experiencia, salvo por un a帽o de estudio en metalurgia, aunque no termin茅 la carrera, y un curso b谩sico de plomer铆a鈥�, dijo Ver贸nica 鈥淎ntes principalmente me dedicaba a mi casa, mis hijos y mi marido y esta fue una oportunidad para hacer algo diferente鈥�.

Al hacer sinergia con Emerge-Lab y con el apoyo de los equipos de gerencia de 8868体育app下载 en terreno, el programa nos ofreci贸 la oportunidad de poder incluir m谩s mujeres en 8868体育app下载, entreg谩ndoles capacitaci贸n y formaci贸n para que ampl铆en sus conocimientos y puedan integrarse a un nuevo ambiente laboral diverso que les permita aumentar sus posibilidades.

鈥淟a experiencia de integrarnos a este programa ha sido muy agradable, todos estaban muy contentos en recibirnos鈥�, agreg贸 Ver贸nica. 鈥淗emos ido aprendiendo desde la base y nos alientan a seguir haciendo carrera en este ambiente鈥�.

Las aprendices han cumplido dos meses realizando diferentes funciones en terreno. Al finalizar su per铆odo de asignaci贸n, nuestras colegas aprendices recibir谩n un reconocimiento que certifique su experiencia, fortaleciendo sus antecedentes laborales.

De acuerdo con los equipos en terreno, los aportes de Ver贸nica y de las otras aprendices han sido muy valiosos.
